2021 Triennial Code Adoption Cycle

Rulemaking Timeline

pre cycle activity for 2021

Pre-cycle activities consist of a number of preliminary steps that lead up to formal commencement of the 2021 Triennial Code Adoption Cycle, which results in the 2022 California Building Standards Code, Title 24. These steps include state agency review of the new model codes (e.g. 2021 International Building, Residential, Existing, and Fires Codes, 2021 Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical Codes, and the 2020 National Electrical Code). The state agencies that propose building codes determine what, if any, model codes require California amendments.

During the pre-cycle period, which continued through Spring 2021, proposing state agencies hold public workshops to discuss possible amendments for the 2022 Code. The 2022 Code will be published on July 1, 2022 and will go into effect on January 1, 2023. Workshops provided an open forum for the public and industry stakeholders to participate in vetting potential modifications to California's building codes.
