The CCDA Listening Forum: Disability Access for Small Businesses hosted in the County of Monterey focused on promoting accessibility compliance and raising awareness of disability issues within businesses. CCDA Executive Director, April Dawson, was the moderator for the event and Juan Rodriguez was the co-sponsor of the listening forum, representing the County of Monterey. This listening forum wanted to show the importance of local conversations with businesses and educate about accessibility with businesses.

Roger Miller, CASp, presented on Access and the Role of a CASp.  He discussed challenges in accessibility compliance, focusing on issues like inaccessible doors and inadequate handrails. He reviewed regulations that can help prevent legal action, sharing insights from his experience. Mr. Miller went over California-specific regulations and programs, including the benefits of early CASp assessments and financial assistance options.

Raymond Torres, Juan “Johnny” Morales, and Whitney Clark were the Voices of Customers that talked about accessibility compliance from their point of view. One topic discussed was businesses not being afraid to assist customers with disabilities and ensuring physical spaces are accessible. They highlighted accessibility issues like parking, button placement, and maintaining accessible features.

After the Voices of Customers, they were joined by more panel members, including Monica Lal, Robert Freiri, and Michelle Davis. The purpose of the panel was to have accessibility compliance dialogue between businesses and customers with disabilities. Panelists expressed the need for businesses to adhere to ADA regulations and standards to guarantee accessibility for individuals with disabilities. They discussed the requirements outlined in the ADA and California Building Code, focusing on compliance with clearance and service height standards. Panelists offered strategies for businesses to enhance accessibility. The CCDA Listening Forum successfully provided local engagement with businesses to help enhance accessibility awareness and inclusivity for all.
