Commissioner Kent Sasaki of Walnut Creek is a Principal with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates (WJE), a nationwide engineering, architectural, and materials science firm. He is a past president of the San Francisco Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Kent has more than 36 years of experience investigating structures in the United States and internationally. His expertise includes earthquake engineering and structural failure investigations. Notable assignments include the earthquake damage assessment of the Washington Monument for the National Park Service and the post‑fire damage assessment of the MacArthur Maze for Caltrans. For 24 years, he managed WJE’s Emeryville office and has served as a structural engineering expert on numerous cases.

Kent earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1987 and a Master of Engineering in Structural Engineering in 1989 from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a licensed civil and structural engineer in California.

Kent previously served as a commissioner on the California Building Standards Commission from 2003 to 2006. In 2012, he was appointed to fill a vacant position on the commission and has served continuously since that time.

Kent is married and has two adult children. He lives in Walnut Creek, California, and is an avid runner, cyclist, swimmer, and triathlete.
