State Capitol Dome Lights To Go Dark During Earth Hour

As a symbol of California’s commitment to the environment and combatting climate change, the Department of General Services (DGS), in cooperation with the California Legislature’s Joint Rules Committee, will turn off the State Capitol dome lights for one hour this Saturday, March 25, to observe Earth Hour. Lights on the dome will go dark from 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

The State Capitol will join other iconic buildings and landmarks around the world that will switch off their lights as people from all walks of life spend an hour in the dark in celebration of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.

For business and security reasons other exterior and interior office lighting at the Capitol building will remain on.

The State Capitol’s contribution to Earth Hour is part of a wider effort by state government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and grid-based energy purchases. Since 2010, thestate has reducedits greenhouse gas emissions at state-owned facilities by 49.9 percent.
