Our communities and economy depend on the safety and sustainability of the built environment – ranging from infrastructure, warehouses and residences to schools, offices and retail stores. Each May during Building Safety Month, we recognize the architects, engineers, builders, tradespeople, building inspectors, fire prevention officials, and others in the construction industry who work to ensure the proper design and construction of California’s buildings and structures. In coordination with the state agencies that implement the California Building Standards Code (Title 24, California Code of Regulations), these professionals work year-round to ensure the safety of the buildings where we work, learn, live and play. California is also working to ensure our buildings are constructed in an energy-efficient and climate-resilient way. The theme of this year’s observance – Building Safety: It Starts with You – asks individuals to consider the global, local and personal impacts of the building standards that help ensure building safety and resilience, and to acknowledge the essential service provided to all of us by building officials who enforce the codes in order to protect lives and property. This month, I encourage all of us to reflect on the vital work of code developers and enforcement officials to protect us not only in times of crisis, but also as we go about our daily lives now and well into the future. Sincerely, Governor Gavin Newsom
