IAPMO Celebrates 100 Years

On behalf of the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC), we extend our congratulations to the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. Founded in California in 1926 by a group of City of Los Angeles plumbing inspectors, IAPMO was established to advance modern sanitation practices, promote consistency in plumbing regulation, and protect the health and safety of the communities they served. Today, those same principles remain foundational to the California Building Standards Code, Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations (Title 24). Over the past century, IAPMO has grown from a California-based association into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to advancing public health through the development of model codes and standards, product certification, workforce education, professional credentialing, research, and technical expertise. Through an open, balanced, and consensus-based code development process, IAPMO's Uniform Plumbing Code and Uniform Mechanical Code have served for decades as the model documents that are adopted and amended by California state agencies to form the California Mechanical Code (Part 4 of Title 24) and the California Plumbing Code (Part 5 of Title 24). The commission recognizes that IAPMO provides an important forum for collaboration between public officials, code enforcement professionals, engineers, architects, manufacturers, contractors, labor representatives, public health experts, and other stakeholders to develop consensus-based model codes and standards that underpin California's efforts to protect public health, improve building safety, conserve water, and promote resilient infrastructure. As IAPMO celebrates its centennial in 2026, CBSC congratulates the association on this historic milestone and extends its appreciation for the organization's leadership and enduring contributions to California's built environment and to communities around the world.
