CAR RENTALS - 4117.2

(Revised: 03/2024)

State employees on official business are required to make commercial car rental reservations through the Statewide Travel Program (STP). Reservations outside of STP will not receive the state’s contracted discounted rates and are a violation of statewide policy. Use of STP for personal car rental reservations is prohibited. Any personal use could lead to civil penalties under Government Code section 8314(c).

For specific information about the current STP commercial car rental contract, please refer to the STP Car Rental Resources page. Vehicles equipped for persons with disabilities may be available from the contracted commercial car rental vendor. Contact STP directly for assistance reserving this type of vehicle.

Compact and Intermediate are the required car rental vehicle classes. If you need a vehicle class larger than Intermediate, you must complete the DGS OFAM 100 (including supervisor’s signature) and submit it to your travel/accounting office/unit before making the reservation.

Commercial car rental vehicles rented for 30 consecutive calendar days or more than (4) consecutive work weeks (excluding weekends and holidays) are considered a long-term rental and are required to be approved by the Fleet and Asset Management Unit (FAMS) prior to renting the vehicle by emailing DGSTLTL@dgs.ca.gov. Circumventing the long-term rental approval process by re-renting week to week or with a short break after 30 consecutive days without seeking OFAM approval, is prohibited.

For specific information about long-term rentals, please refer to the Renting a Long-Term Vehicle section of STP Car Rental Resource page.
