Surplus Program for Schools
WHY SCHOOL DISTRICTS SHOULD BE ACQUAINTED WITH CALIFORNIA’S SURPLUS PROPERTY PROGRAMS
The Department of General Services, through the Office of Fleet and Asset Management, offers surplus state and federal personal property for sale at a fraction of the original cost. Additionally, California law gives public schools first priority to purchase this material. A wide variety of cost effective items are available such as: printers, copiers, laptops, vehicles, machinery, furniture and much more. This material is made available to school districts at below fair market value before going to public auction. Consequently, this may be a good time to become familiar with these programs and take advantage of the benefits which are directed toward California’s public schools.
THE LAW
You can review the statute allowing the Department of General Services to provide personal property to California’s schools as described above. Please view
Public Contract Code Section 10389.1
HOW THE PROGRAMS WORK
Public schools and districts can visit the Sacramento Warehouse located at 1700 National Drive in Sacramento and shop for state owned surplus property Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Contact: Jeff Jones | Office: 916. 928.5806 | Email:
Jeff.Jones@dgs.ca.gov
. School district representatives can also request specific material that may be available at a later date.
In regard to federal surplus property, school districts routinely apply for program eligibility. This gives the representative of record the ability to search a national database of available surplus material at locations throughout the United States. The Department of General Services can facilitate the application process for school districts. For assistance and eligibility information, please contact the Surplus Property and Reutilization manger, Steve Paul Office: 916.928.2183 | Email:
