What is an Internet exam?

An Internet exam is an online exam given by the California Department of Human Resources (Cal HR). The Department of General Services, Division of the State Architect, currently uses Internet exams for the following classifications. These exams are available on a continuous basis:

  • Associate Architect
  • District Structural Engineer
  • Fire and Life Safety Officer I
  • Fire and Life Safety Officer II
  • Senior Architect
  • Senior Structural Engineer

Who can take an Internet exam?

Anyone who meets the minimum qualifications of the classification being tested may apply for an Internet exam. You do not have to be a State employee. See the exam bulletin or Cal HR class specification to see if you meet the minimum requirements.

Where can I take an Internet exam?

You can go to the Online Exam page on the CalHR Website or http://www.jobs.ca.gov/. Please note: the Internet system will be unavailable on Tuesdays between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Pacific Standard Time, for processing and maintenance. DO NOT begin the application process on the Internet during this time as your record will NOT be processed.

It takes approximately one hour to complete the Application and the Training and Experience Evaluation on the Internet. If you begin the examination before 7:00 a.m. on a Tuesday, be sure to allow sufficient time to complete the process (you must complete the exam before 7:00 a.m.)

When will I know my score?

You will receive your test score as soon as you complete and pass the exam. However, it may take up to a week for your exam ranking to update on the hiring list since Cal HR updates the exam list every Tuesday.

How long will I remain on the eligible list?

You will remain on the list for one year from the date you complete and pass the exam.

How often can I take the Internet exam?

You are eligible to take the exam every twelve months. Since you remain on the list for twelve months, there may be a window of time in which you appear on the list twice. However, the system will remove your earlier score after 12 months. The system will tell you when you are eligible to take the exam again.

Is a State application (STD 678) required to participate in the Internet exam?

Yes. The State application is required and included as the first component of the Internet exam.

Who can I contact if I have more questions on the Internet exam?

The DGS Office of Human Resources, Selections Unit at 916.376.5400.
