| DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SERVICES WINS AWARD FOR RENOVATING HISTORIC BROADWAY BUILDING IN LOS ANGELES | ||||||||||||||||||
Sacramento-The California Department of General Services today announced it was honored with an "Outstanding Achievement Award" from the Southern California Development Forum for the renovation of the historic Broadway Building in Los Angeles. The former flagship building of the Broadway department store chain was formally re-dedicated in September 1999.
"The Broadway building is more than just a work place for public servants, it's also a place of history and art," said DGS Interim Director Cliff Allenby. "The renovation blends historic architecture with state of the art technology, while providing for a more effective operation of important state services." The 9th Annual Southern California Development Forum (SCDF) Awards were designed to recognize the contributions of organizations that enhance the real estate and business environment of the region.
"The State's renovation of the Broadway Building is an exciting way to showcase California artists, as well as preserving an historically significant structure," said Susan Perry, president-elect of SCDF. "It's also a significant step in the economic revitalization of Los Angeles' historic downtown core."
The rehabilitation of the ten-story, 85-year-old structure at 4th and Broadway cost $69 million. It consolidates the operations of 12 state agencies and houses approximately 1,100 employees under the same roof resulting in greater operational efficiencies. Several features of the historic building have been preserved including a mahogany stairwell from the original 1914 structure, flagpoles, and a marble art deco department store floor medallion.
Swinerton and Walberg Company served as the project general contractor; Johnson/Fain Partners the design architect. Tishman Construction Corporation performed construction management services for the Los Angeles/State Building Authority.
