Sacramento ¾ The California Department of General Services (DGS) today reported to the State Legislature that the cost of repairing and restoring the historic State Capitol building due to water, smoke and fire damage in the wake of January's truck crash is estimated at $16.5 million.

Estimated repair and restoration costs include;
  • $7.4 million for extensive fire and collision damage to the south portico of the Capitol, and south lawn landscaping.
  • $2.8 million for smoke damage in Senate Chambers, Senate Members offices, and other portions of the Capitol.
  • $2 million for water and mold damage in the Capitol basement.
  • $1.9 million for fire, smoke, water and collision damage in Senate Hearing Room 113.
  • $1.7 million for smoke and water damage to the remainder of the Capitol's first floor.
  • $556 thousand for initial emergency clean-up.
DGS estimates that the basement, Rooms 112, 113 and 115, and most other areas of the first floor will reopen between mid-spring and early summer. The final restoration of the south portico, and repairs and restoration to the damaged exterior granite are expected to be completed by early 2002.
