DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SERVICES CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL PRINTING WEEK
Sacramento : The California Department of General Services'
(DGS) Office of State Publishing—the nation's largest government printing operation outside of
Washington, D.C.— will observe International Printing Week with tours and an open house for
the general public during the week of January 14-20, 2001.

"Not only is the state's publishing operation the biggest of its kind in the nation, it's
among the greenest as well," said DGS Director Barry D. Keene. "Environmentally sound
printing practices are part of this administration's commitment to preserving natural resources."

The printing plant recycles nearly five million pounds of waste paper a year while
employing recycled content paper in the vast majority of its projects. The printing plant
publishes approximately 14 million state income tax forms, more than 12 million ballot
pamphlets, approximately five million Department of Motor Vehicle handbooks, the governor's
budget, all legislative bills, and thousands of other projects for state agencies.

Besides its increasing use of recycled materials and waste recycling efforts, DGS
employs other "green" printing practices including: the use of environment-friendly inks and
hazardous waste and material training for printing plant employees.

Tours of the Office of State Publishing, which employs 500 people at its 300,000 square-
foot facility (located at 344 N. 7th Street in Sacramento), will include special activities for school
children on Tuesday, January 16th, an open house for OSP customers on Wednesday, January
17th and an open house for the general public on Thursday, January 18th. Those interested are
asked to make reservations and wear comfortable walking shoes for the hour and one-half tour
that covers approximately one mile.
