| PALM TREE TRANSPLANTS, CONCRETE WORK HIGHLIGHT CAPITOL AREA EAST END COMPLEX CONSTRUCTION | ||||||||||||||||||
Sacramento—During the week of July 10th the last of 10, 80-year-old California Fan Palms along Capitol Avenue within the construction site of the State’s East End Complex will be relocated to nearby Capitol Park, and a massive concrete pouring operation will commence along 15th and O streets.
Palms Preserved, Relocated
The current location of the palms will be the site of underground parking for the East End Complex, so they would either have to be removed or cut down. Relocation of the 60-foot, 25-ton trees will take place during evening and overnight hours to lessen the impact on traffic around the Capitol area.
Four Palms located on Capitol Avenue between 15th and 16th streets were transplanted July 7th along 15th Street between L and N streets. Four palms will be moved and re-planted along 10th Street between L and N streets Tuesday night between 6 PM and 6 AM. One palm will be moved and re-planted along N Street between 10th and 15th streets Thursday night, beginning at 10 PM.
The staging area for the relocation of the palm trees is the former parking lot of the California Conservation Corps, at 15th and Capitol Avenue. The trees were excavated last week and laid on large flatbed trailers in preparation for the move.
Concrete "Mat" Foundation Pour
Excavation at the one-block site located at 14th, 15th, N and O Streets is nearing completion. The next major construction activity scheduled for the site is the pouring of the concrete "mat" foundation. The foundation pour is in lieu of noisy hydraulic pile driving, which would have taken weeks to accomplish.
The first concrete pour is scheduled for Saturday night and will be approximately 40,000 square feet or 3,800 cubic yards of concrete. This amount of concrete would pave a sidewalk 3 feet wide, 3.5 inches thick, 68 miles long. The second and final pour is scheduled for August 5th.
When completed in 2003, the Capitol Area East End Office Complex will be the workday home to 6,300 state workers. The complex is under construction on a one-block site bounded by 14th, 15th, N and O streets, and on a four-block site bounded by 15th, 17th, L and N streets. The project also includes a parking structure located at P Street between 13th and 14th streets, which was completed in February 2000.
