GOVERNOR DAVIS APPOINTS DIRECTOR TO THE DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SERVICES
SACRAMENTO—Governor Gray Davis today announced the appointment of Barry D. Keene as director of the Department of General Services.
 
Mr. Keene, 61, of Sacramento, is currently teaching through the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He has served as a lecturer for the Public Management Program of the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, a project director for the California Casebook for the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento, and an advocate representing Stanford University before the California Legislature. From 1994 to 1996, he served as a full-time instructor in the Graduate Program in Public Policy and Administration for California State University, Sacramento. Prior to that, Mr. Keene was president and chief executive officer of the Association for California Tort Reform. From 1972 to 1978, he served as a member of the California Assembly. From 1978 to 1992, Mr. Keene served as a member of the California Senate. He is a member of the California State Bar. Mr. Keene earned bachelor of arts and juris doctorate degrees from Stanford University. He replaces acting director Cliff Allenby, who now resumes full duties as director of the Department of Developmental Services.
 
The director is responsible for the overall management of the Department of General Services. Mr. Keene will receive a salary of $118,514. This position requires Senate confirmation.
